What happens when I add a new sender to a running automation?

add sender, new sender, running automation, sender not sending, contacts not assigned, redistribute, restart, rotation

This article explains how GetSales assigns contacts to sender profiles when you add a new sender to an automation that is already running.

How contact assignment works

When you add a new sender to a running automation, it does not redistribute contacts already In Progress. Contacts that have been added to the automation stay assigned to their original sender and continue through the automation normally.

The new sender will only pick up contacts that were added after the new sender was added.

Note: This is expected behavior, not a bug. If your new sender appears to be doing nothing at first, it's because all current contacts are already assigned to other senders.

How to restart contacts for a new sender

If you want to reassign existing contacts to the new sender, you can restart them β€” but only from the correct node.

What is the correct node to restart contacts?

Safe to restart from: the Send Connection Request node. Restarting from this node reassigns contacts to the chosen sender without interrupting the automation flow.

Do not restart from: a Send Message node. Restarting from a message node will cause those contacts to receive the same message again.

Steps to add a sender and assign contacts safely

  1. Add the new sender profile to your automation on the Senders node.

Click the Sender node to access the sidebar and click Add more to add a new sender

  2. Go to the Send Connection Request node and click the In Progress count.

  5. Refresh the page and check that the Segment node has a Restarted count.

How to restart contacts for multiple new senders

The restart flow in case of adding multiple sender profiles is very similar but has some alterations. Since we add multiple new senders, we have to set up the correct Contacts distribution model first.

What is the correct Contacts distribution model when restarting contacts?

The Contacts distribution model defines how contacts are distributed between multiple senders. When restarting contacts in order to assign new sender profiles with tasks/contacts, we advise choosing the Random Rotation model. This model distributes contacts evenly across all sender profiles without workload balancing or other conditions.

Steps to redistribute contacts among multiple sender profiles

  1. Select the Random Rotation model in the Sender node settings.

Click the Sender node to access the sidebar and select Random Rotation

  2. Go to the Send Connection Request node and click the In Progress count.

  3. Select all contacts and click Restart from top.

Check the checkbox next to the Task Detail, then click Restart from top button

  4. Leave the Sender Profile field blank to redistribute contacts among all sender profiles.

Restart from top confirmation window with segment and sender profile selection

Select the segment to restart contacts from top

  5. Refresh the page and check that the Segment node has a Restarted count.

Mistakes to avoid when restarting contacts

  • Do not select more than 500 tasks in the Manage tasks window. GetSales can only handle 500 contacts per request. If there are more than 500 tasks to restart, do it in 500-contact batches.
